Project description:
A OneFob is a security device. It is a virtual device that is intended to
be hosted on common everyday hardware devices like cell phones, PDA's and solid
state entities such as flash-cards or USB drives. It has many similarities
and functions analogous to a Smart Card.
Smart Cards provide a very secure hardware token but the technology is very bare-bones and complicated; it is complicated to implement applications; the
devices themselves and the specialized hardware they require are not readily
available or easy to install; they have limited computational ability; they have
very limited memory capacities; they have a relatively high price point; and, in
the end, are not completely impervious to being compromised.
Our core premise is that all the functions and benefits of a Smart Card can
be implemented on more common devices, reducing the number of gadgets a
individual must carry on their person. Furthermore, implementing the
security device with common, off-the-shelf hardware devices provides the
greatest flexibility for the user in terms of memory capacity and "other"
functions that compliment the user's daily activities.
